King Kong: Modernity & Its Discontents

Talking about having your cake and eating it too, check out this fascinating piece on NPR's Sunday Weekend Edition that puts King Kong in cultural context.  It fits well with what I've been writing about the past week or so.  Kong is the symbol of the ambivalence we feel toward the primitive past.  It also sheds light on the persistence in American culture of guns and hunting.  Is this about nostalgia or retrieval?  No easy answer to that.  I'll address that issue in a future post.
