Republicans were not really Mr. Biden’s target audience in any case. For all his expressed hopes of bringing the country together, the president and his team have come to accept that 40 percent of Americans are beyond his reach, unwilling to listen. And so Mr. Biden was speaking not to them but to the 81 million Americans who formed the coalition of Democrats, independents and disaffected Republicans he assembled two years ago, hoping to bring them out for his favored congressional candidates. Again, only 27% of Americans self identify as Republicans, and some of them are Never Trumpers. The Independents that voted for Trump did so before J6 and Mar-a-Lago, and maybe by now it's finally dawned on them what's he's really about.
But the problem is not just Trump but the GOP that has embraced him, excuses his crimes, and caters to his crackpot MAGA base. The GOP is no longer the party of traditional values, national security, good sense, fiscal restraint, and law and order, but the party of extremists, conspiracy theory lunatics, religious fanatics, proto-fascists, white supremacists, and obeisant personality cultists. These folks are no longer on the fringes of the party, but dominate it. So there is no redeeming the party except by rejecting it at the polls, and that's up to to Independents and Never-Trump Republicans to whom Biden was speaking last night. I'm feeling more optimistic that they are finally capable of understanding the important role that they play in shaping the American future, and that lies with holding their noses and voting Democrat--or just not voting at all.
